Die Deutsche Bundesbank in der Globalsteuerung
    (2024) Marx, Christian
Keynesian-inspired macro regulation gained importance in West German econo-mic policy from the mid-1960s and was enshrined in law through the Stability and Growth Actin 1967. In the context of the legislative process, the question arose as to what extent the Deut-sche Bundesbank should be given new central bank instruments in order to achieve the goalof price stability. In the end, their implementation was rejected as the government demandedparticipation rights that contradicted the principle of central bank independence. Based ondocuments from the Historical Archive of the Deutsche Bundesbank and the Federal Archives, the article examines the arguments in favor of the new instruments and the reasons that pre-vented their implementation

Multinationale Unternehmen in Westeuropa seit dem Ende des Booms
    (2015) Marx, Christian

Reorganization of multinational companies in the Western European chemical industry
    (2020) Marx, Christian
Multinationals experienced a great growth after the European postwar boom. Factors in the 1970s included increasing competition from the United States, the emerging European market, as well as ongoing economic crises and changes in the international economy. The articles analyzes three case studies of Western European chemical companies—Hoechst, Akzo, and Rhône-Poulenc—to show the consequences of structural changes on management and the workforce. This article argues that (1) domestic export-oriented supplement investments lost importance, and the domestic workforce had a harder time meeting qualification requirements; (2) organizational changes incorporated divisional competitive elements into a company’s organization of work; and (3) managers had to learn to respect national path dependencies and specific skills of the local workforce. Furthermore, it illustrates the developments of the workforce in Europe and abroad and stresses the importance of nationality within the management of multinationals.

Seitenwechsler im Zentralbankwesen – Karrieren im Beziehungsdreieck von Finanzwelt, Wissenschaft und Politik (1948 bis 1970)
    (2023) Marx, Christian
The article examines the careers of German central bankers and the phenomenon of the revolving door in the first two postwar decades. It focuses on the personnel changes between central banking and politics resp. private banking and asks for the social structure of German central bankers, their training paths and changes in comparison to the Reichsbank era. Finally, the impact of recruitment practices on central bank policy will be outlined. The paper is based on the thesis that party-political orientation became significant for the rise of the presidents of the land central banks (Landeszentralbankpräsidenten) after 1945 and that relations to private banking were primarily evident in training, whereas such aspects were of secondary importance for central bank monetary policy.
